Sefton Democracy Club turns spotlight on the media's influence over UK politics at September meeting




Sefton Democracy Club will be discussing the media's influence on UK politics at its September meeting.

Guest speakers at the meeting include a former Reuters executive and a leading regional political reporter.

Does the media impose too much influence on our politics? Is the media politically bias? What has the hacking scandal revealed about the relationship between the media and our national politics?

Whatever your opinion, come along and have your say.

Sefton Democracy Club is an apolitical group which has been established to give the people of Sefton the chance to freely debate some of the big issues of the day.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 27 starting at 7pm at Maghull Town Hall.

August meeting: Were there underlying causes for the UK riots or were they down to wanton criminality?



This month's riots are the topic up for debate at August's Sefton Democracy Club meeting.

Are there underlying causes for the outbreak of the riots on our streets or were they simply down to wanton criminality?

July meeting: Immigration: Good or Bad?



Sefton Democracy Club will be tackling the issue of immigration during its July meeting.

The club, which meets monthly, will be asking the question 'Immigration: Good or Bad?' from 7pm at Maghull Town Hall on Tuesday, July 26.

The meeting promises to include a heated debate.

June meeting: NHS and Welfare Reform


Sefton Democracy Club will be discussing NHS and welfare reform at its June meeting.
This month's discussion will take place at Maghull Town Hall starting at 7pm on Tuesday, June 28.

May meeting: Do we need Constitutional Reform?


Sefton Democracy Club will be holding this month's meeting on Tuesday, May 31 at Maghull Town Hall starting at 7pm.

Sefton Democracy Club discusses AV referendum at April meeting




Sefton Democracy Club will be discussing the Alternative Vote at it April meeting next week.

Guest speakers from the Yes to AV campaign and the No to AV campaign will both put their cases before members join the debate.

So if you’re wondering what the referendum is all about, how AV works and if you want to hear the arguments for and against, then come along.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 26 starting at 7pm at Maghull Town Hall.

March meeting: The Rights and Wrongs of Building on the Green Belt



Sefton Democracy Club will be discussing the rights and wrongs of building on Green Belt at its March meeting.

The current government wants to relax the building laws to allow developments on the country's Green Belt land - including in Sefton - in order to ease the housing shortage.

Come along and have your say.

The meeting is free to attend and is held at Maghull Town Hall on Tuesday, March 29 starting at 7pm.

Europe comes under the spotlight at February's meeting



Sefton Democracy Club's February meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 22 at 7pm at Maghull Town Hall.

The topic up for discussion at the meeting will be Europe.

There will be two guest speakers attending, one pro-Europe and one anti-Europe and both will be given the chance to state their positions before members engage in the discussion.

As usual the meetings are free to attend and all are welcome to come along.

Future meetings will now be held on the last Tuesday of the month starting at 7pm.

The NHS: Britain's jewel in the crown or a 60 year mistake?


Sefton Democracy Club will be meeting on Wednesday (January 12) when the topic of discussion will be the NHS.

The first debate of 2011 will focus on the NHS and will discuss the question: Is the NHS Britain's jewel in the crown or a 60 year mistake?

Health service professionals will attend the meeting giving their first-hand experience of working within the NHS.

Between 40 and 50 people attend the club's regular meetings with issues ranging from Privatisation v Nationalisation to Education.

The meeting is free to attend and will be held at Maghull Town Hall starting at 7pm.
