Sefton Democracy Club's September meeting saw members discuss the issue of Education.
Members gathered at Maghull Town Hall where they heard short presentations from retired deputy head teacher Maurice Byrne and further and higher education expert Patrick McKinley.
Following the presentations, members were able to quiz the two experts and engage in a debate on how education has evolved in Britain, how it can be improved and the future schooling in the 21st century.
Among the questions raised and debated by members were:
- GCSE and A Level pass rates are at record levels, but have standards really increased?
- Why does social status/class have an impact on attainment?
- How can we reduce inequality in education?
- Is private education right or wrong?
- Should parents be held more responsible for their children's education?
- How should education be funded and should it be protected from fiscal cuts?
- What can be done to improve education?
The next meeting for Sefton Democracy Club is October 7 starting at 7.30pm in Maghull Town Hall. All are welcome to attend.
