Privatisation v Nationalisation: CWU general secretary Billy Hayes and Conservative David Sudworth put their cases

This month's Sefton Democracy Club has some very special guest speakers with Communications Workers Union general secretary Billy Hayes going head to head with Conservative David Sudworth to debate Privatisation v Nationalisation.

The premise for the debate will centre around the following arguments:

“Nationalisation leads to inefficiency and greater cost to the tax-payer. While privatisation ensures services are competitive and quality-driven.”

and

“Privatisation puts power in the hands of the rich with profits put before people. While nationalisation ensures market forces do not compromise on service.”

Billy and David will give five to 10 minute presentations giving their positions on the argument followed by an open floor debate when members can discuss the issue.

This is the fifth Sefton Democracy Club meeting with previous meetings focusing on everything from Education to Law and Order.

Co-founder of the group Patrick McKinley said: "As anyone who has come along to any of the previous meetings will know, the Sefton Democracy Club is an apolitical group whose aim is to engage people in the democratic process by openly discussing topical issues.

"We have a good mix of people attending, with new people coming along every month.  People who have attended have commented on how enjoyable the discussions are, with all points of view welcomed and no-one shouted down.

"For this month's meeting, we are lucky enough to have Billy Hayes attending from the CWU putting the case for defending nationalised industries like the Royal Mail and David Sudworth putting the case for the private sector.

"It should be a very interesting debate and I'd encourage anyone who is interested to come along."

The meeting will be held at Maghull Town Hall starting at 7pm on Wednesday, November 10.
