Sefton Democracy Club: putting the big questions to the big issues

A new group is being set up in Sefton to allow people to question - and get answers - on the big issues of the day.

Sefton Democracy Club is a newly formed organisation which plans to bring the people of Maghull, Aintree, Melling and Lydiate together to join regular debates and discussions.

Organisers behind the group also plan to bring in topical experts to answer questions.

Group co-founder former economics lecturer Patrick McKinley said the idea for the Democracy Club came about during the run up to the general election.

Patrick said: "Throughout the election period we were all bombarded with leaflets and messages from the various parties making claims and counter-claim.

"I talked to people about some of the big issues and many people just simply didn't know the facts.

"For instance why does the country have the deficit we currently have? Why do we need to make the cuts we are currently seeing this government make and what impact will these cuts have on real people's lives? And are there any alternatives?

"Sefton Democracy Club will be a forum where people can get together to ask the questions that they need answering. They will get answers and even get the chance to join discussions on these issues."

The first meeting will be held at Maghull Town Hall.

Patrick added: "This will be the first meeting of Sefton Democracy Club and I'd urge as many people as possible to join us. Many ordinary people who may bot belong to any political parties feel frustrated that they can't influence local and national decisions - well they can. We want to build a platform where people feel connected and realise they can make a real difference.

"One of the issues we will be discussing is the economy but we will also allow people to come along and steer the discussion and decide what future issues we need to tackle.

"We want this club to inform as well as entertain - we aren't the Oxford Union!"

Sefton Democracy Club will be holding its first free meeting at 7.30pm on Thursday, July 1 in the lounge at Maghull Town Hall. All are welcome to attend.
